Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society

5 11 2009

We’ve checked out the music they make available online (there’s an unfortunately limited number of tracks available to purchase on iTunes) – their website has substantially more, and – it’s free!

These guys remind me of this group of musicians that stopped me in my tracks on the way home from my (now abandoned) corporate job. They were playing in the Herald Square station at 34th Street (by the N/R/W & F/B/V/D lines) – and I stood there in my suit – mesmerized. I bought the CD immediately.

While Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society doesn’t have the intensity of that group (whose name btw was “Hypnotic Brass Ensemble”), there is an element of the unexpected to the tracks. Interesting grooves – which often deviate from the path one would expect them to go down. In short, it has a sly way of making you NEED to keep listening. All in all, I was a little let down to find that the vast majority of these tunes seem to follow the same structure. Which, tends to make listening to them for more than 45 minutes – well – after 45 minutes, you get the picture. You know what their story is. It’s not bad – in fact, it’s quite good. But it never deviates from the stated groove.

All that said, it would be great to see them live!

It’s not often that you read these kind of reviews in the times – but maybe this will assist in getting independent jazz musicians back in the spotlight – after a long and unfortunate hiatus.

Searching for musicians

15 10 2009

We’re always looking for new people to play with! Not only does it keep us on our toes, it helps everyone involved stay relevant in an art that is constantly evolving. You never know what someone else is going to bring to the table – it might be something that will bring you to the next level!

If you’re in the NYC area, drop us a line! We’d love to check out some new talent!

Puppets Jazz Bar?

13 10 2009

Does anyone have any experience with this place? It’s one of the top search results when looking for jazz venues in Brooklyn – one of the only locations that is found outside of a directory page.

We called them a few months ago to inquire about a gig – and received vastly different responses from the owner and the “booking manager”. The owner was very enthusiastic, and willing to work with us on payment, dates, etc. On the other hand, the “booking manager” (who called us after a number of conversations with the owner) seemed rather unwilling to work with us – which, considering the number of available dates on their calender, seems to be quite counterproductive.

Curious if anyone has had any experience playing there?

Preservation Hall Jazz Band – scenes from The Blue Note

13 10 2009

Had the pleasure of seeing these guys at The Blue Note in the West Village in NYC.  Quite honestly, they weren’t on our A-list – until the started to play.  And to be clear – they can PLAY.  Totally entertaining, and very solid musicians – all in all, it was a great show.  Here’s the proof..

Chez Oskar

13 10 2009

On Dekalb Avenue in the Fort Greene section of Brooklyn – lots of live music!  We’ve contacted them – hopefully they will be featuring some of OUR featured artists!  They seem to have few groups that play there on a regular basis – when we walked by this evening, sounded like a New Orleans-flavored tune, being thoroughly appreciated by a good sized crowd.  We’ll certainly be back to check out some more music – if anyone is in the area, send us a note!

Parlor Jazz

Looking for some more information about a venue we’ve come across a couple times called “Parlor Jazz”.  Will report back later with booking information!

Bringing Jazz back to Brooklyn

12 10 2009

In the past few months, we’ve noticed that more local establishments have been featuring live music – which is not only fantastic for the community (which has been whining for the lack of good music in the area, other than BAM) – but it’s great news for local musicians!  We’ll be scouting out some of these venues in the coming days to get an idea of what they’re all about – what style of music they’re looking for, how they compensate their musicians, frequency of gigs, availability, etc.
